The skis come out of the garage, the weather forecast gets refreshed every half hour and the family Sunday is planned around ski conditions. About twenty minutes later, that same skier is standing at the edge of the track, stamping their feet and declaring that winter sports are not for them after all. The truth is, nobody ever told them that ski socks are a science of their own.

Our experience says the winter and the sport are innocent. The socks are guilty. At Sokisahtel we hear the same story at the start of every winter: the feet got cold, the training got cut short and the skis are already up for sale online, waiting for a new owner. More precisely, the guilty ones are those socks that came out of the drawer first: thick, cotton and dating back to the time when socks were still paid for in Estonian kroons.

Cold toes have ended more ski sessions than any lack of snow. So before you head out again this winter, let us talk honestly about what should be inside that boot.

Rule number one: leave cotton at home

We will start with the most important part, because if you only read one paragraph of this article, make it this one. A cotton sock is a traitor in winter. Not because cotton is a terrible material, cotton socks have their honourable place in summer and at the office. But cotton loves water. It soaks up sweat like a sponge and holds it there, right against your skin. Wet cotton pulls heat away from your body many times faster than dry cotton, so you sweat on the first climb and freeze on the first descent.

Wool does the exact opposite. A wool fibre can absorb nearly a third of its own weight in moisture without feeling wet, and it keeps insulating even when damp. That is the whole secret of good ski socks.

Ski socks, or why thin is the new thick

Now for the surprise that raises an eyebrow in our shops every other day. Good ski socks are not thick. Logic would say the colder the weather, the thicker the sock, but the ski boot says otherwise. The boot was chosen to fit your foot, and if you stuff a thick sock in there, the boot starts to squeeze. A squeezed foot has no blood flow, and blood flow is exactly what keeps toes warm. So the thick sock achieves precisely what it was bought to prevent: cold toes.

Our salespeople have had this conversation hundreds of times and the ending is always the same: the customer comes back a week later and admits that the thin sock won after all.

The right ski socks are thin or mid-weight, fit like a second skin and are made of a material that wicks moisture. Merino wool ski socks are the standard here: thin enough to fit in the boot, warm enough to handle minus degrees, and so soft they will not itch even halfway through the Tartu Marathon. Cross-country skiers who train seriously should also look at longer models that cover the calf where ski pants and boot never quite meet.

Downhill skiers and snowboarders, there is one more trick for you: compression knee-highs. A long day on the mountain means hours in a rigid boot, with the foot under constant light pressure. Compression supports blood flow, reduces calf fatigue and helps with recovery afterwards.

And one more thing that experienced skiers know and beginners learn the painful way. Ski socks must not wrinkle inside the boot. Every wrinkle is a blister two hours later. If your sock slides down the calf or twists at the toes, it is the wrong size. How to pick the right size, we have a whole guide for that, linked at the end of this article.

Skating socks and the ice rink paradox

Skating is the winter sport you can do even when the snow refuses to show up in November or December. Ice halls are open all year round, and the outdoor rinks on town squares are one of the loveliest things about an Estonian winter. But a skate boot is even more demanding than a ski boot.

A skate boot should fit like a handshake, snug and firm. A thick fluffy sock makes skating instantly harder: the foot starts moving inside the boot, support disappears and the ankles tire twice as fast. Hockey players and figure skaters often wear ultra-thin socks or even skate barefoot, because they want to feel the boot. We do not recommend bare feet for casual skaters, especially in rental skates, but the principle stands: good skating socks are like thin ski socks, snug, wool and dry. The air in an ice hall is damp and cold, and a wet foot feels it fast. A spare pair of dry ski socks in the bag has saved more than one rink evening.

Sledding hills and snowball fights: winter sports for kids

Winter sports for kids differ from the adult version in one crucial detail: a child does not come inside when they get cold. A child comes inside when the sledding hill closes or the snow runs out. Cold and wet feet are discovered in the hallway, usually together with the great surprise that the socks have somehow wandered out of the boots on their own and filled up with snow.

That is why everything above applies to children twice over. Wool socks, not cotton. Rather two thinner pairs layered than one thick one, because the air between the layers insulates and the bottom layer keeps the skin dry. And always keep a spare pair in the bag, because sledding in wet socks is the fastest route to a cough and a runny nose.

When a child starts ski training, the shopping list is short: skis, boots and proper ski socks. At Sokisahtel we know very well that the child picks a sock by the pattern and the parent by the material, which is why our kids’ shelf has both at once: wool socks in every size from baby to teenager, and fun enough that they actually get worn.

Winter running and Nordic walking: training that skips the hibernation

Not everyone puts their running shoes away for the winter. Estonia’s outdoor fitness trails are a world of their own in winter: lit tracks, crunching snow and that special silence you will not find in summer. But a winter runner’s foot lives a complicated life. It sweats like it is summer and freezes like it is winter, sometimes within the same kilometre.

The solution is the same word you can already guess. A merino wool sports sock wicks sweat away from the skin and keeps you warm even when the pace drops for a moment. Avoid overly long and fluffy socks that collect moisture, and look for a more technical knit instead. And when it is properly freezing outside, layering helps elsewhere too: thermal underwear under your running clothes makes a difference you will feel within the first kilometre. Your ski socks can have a rest day.

Nordic walkers and winter hikers can afford a thicker sock, because a hiking boot has more room. This is where the classic thick wool sock comes into play, the very one that was not allowed into the ski boot. It has its rightful place, and that place is the hiking trail.

After the workout: sauna, sofa and warm socks

The most underrated part of winter sports is what happens afterwards. The training is done, the cheeks are red, and now begins the recovery, for which Estonians invented the sauna. The wet ski socks go into the laundry basket, and on go socks that have nothing to do with sport anymore: thick, soft and knitted, with one single job, to make everything feel good.

This is the golden moment for alpaca wool socks. Alpaca wool is even warmer and lighter than merino and feels wonderful on the foot. If you want to make a winter day perfect, the sofa also calls for an alpaca wool blanket and a mug of hot cocoa in your hand. Nobody needs to train for this part of winter sports, it comes naturally.

Three quick answers to finish

How many pairs of ski socks do you need for the winter sports season? Rule of thumb: two pairs for training, so one can always be drying, one pair for recovery and one spare pair for the bag.

How should you wash wool ski socks? Wool programme or hand wash, 30 degrees at most, and keep them away from the dryer. You will find the longer care guide below.

Are more expensive ski socks really better? In winter sports, mostly yes, because the difference is not in the logo but in the material and the comfort. Ski socks are the only thing between you and the boot. All the rest of the gear can be borrowed, but the socks should be your own, and right.

Winter is coming anyway. The only question is whether you meet it with cold toes or not. Our advice is simple: go through your wool sock selection before the first snow, not after the first frostbite. Good ski socks pay for themselves with the first cold snap. See you on the track.

Read also

Size chart and tips on how to care for socks and other knitwear

How to style socks

Estonian brands you did not know

Every year, about three days after the first proper snowfall, Estonia gains a hundred thousand new skiers.
