In the past, people danced at village celebrations, weddings, and seasonal festivals. Dance was simply a part of life. The polka was danced when the fieldwork was done, and people twirled when the bride was married off.<\/p>\n<p>Estonian folk dance is a centuries-old tradition. And then came <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anna_Raudkats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Anna Raudkats<\/a><\/strong> (1886-1926) &#8211; the woman known as the mother of Estonian folk dance. She laid the foundation for everything we know today as folk dance. In 2026, <a href=\"https:\/\/errs.ee\/2026\/02\/27\/ootame-tantse-2026-aasta-uute-tantsude-konkursile\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the 140th anniversary of Anna Raudkats\u2019s birth<\/a> will be celebrated, and a whole range of exciting events will take place in her honor.<\/p>\n<p>And of course, the <strong>Song and Dance Celebration<\/strong> probably needs no introduction. It is such a major event that it is even included on <a href=\"https:\/\/visitestonia.com\/en\/what-to-do\/welcome-to-the-estonian-song-and-dance-celebration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UNESCO\u2019s Intangible Cultural Heritage list<\/a>. The last celebration took place in the summer of 2025, and the next one will be in 2030.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-exciting-things-will-2026-bring\">What Exciting Things Will 2026 Bring?<\/h2>\n<p>The folk dancers\u2019 calendar is pretty packed this year. Make a note of these in your planner:<\/p>\n<p><strong>P\u00e4rnu Gymnastics and Folk Dance Festival (August 13-16)<\/strong>, This summer marks 150 years since the first Estonian gymnastics festival, so the <a href=\"https:\/\/errs.ee\/2025\/03\/13\/2026-aasta-suvel-toimub-parnus-voimlemise-ja-rahvatantsu-festival\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">P\u00e4rnu festival<\/a> will be especially festive. Thousands of dancers, the sea nearby, summer warmth, what could be better?<\/p>\n<p><strong>V\u00f5ru Folk Dance Festival (July 2026)<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/vorufolkloor.ee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The V\u00f5ru festival<\/a> is always such a warm and enjoyable event, where you can both dance yourself and watch others.
