Nine-year-old inventor and designer Mia, also known as MiKU, created the YOKAI sock collection inspired by Japanese culture and mythology. The sales revenue from the project helps support Vivita\u2019s Japan-focused educational projects, of which Mia is a member.<\/p>\n
Mia Kulpin is a young inventor. Her latest project, YOKAI, began with an illustrators\u2019 competition where she created her own collection of Japanese-inspired sock patterns. Later, she approached the VIVITA inventors\u2019 lab with her idea to further develop the project and turn it into a real product \u2014 designer socks.<\/p>\n
What is YOKAI?<\/p>\n
Yokai are creatures from Japanese myths and folklore, with stories about them being told for centuries.<\/p>\n
One of the most well-known is KITSUNE \u2014 a wise and magical fox that can transform into human form. Kitsune symbolizes cleverness, creativity, and transformation \u2014 qualities that are also characteristic of young inventors.<\/p>\n
The Yokai collection is also inspired by simple and repetitive Japanese patterns such as SEIGAIHA (ocean waves) and KIKU (chrysanthemum), which symbolize beauty, peace, and balance.<\/p>\n
