December has its own sound in the Sokisahtel office: the rustle of wrapping paper and the squeak of the tape roll. The wrapping table never sits empty before Christmas, and behind that table we have learned one thing for certain over the years. The most joy does not come from the big boxes. It comes from small Christmas gifts. Ask yourself what you actually remember from last Christmas. Probably not the vacuum cleaner. What you remember is that soft little package with funny socks inside, or the tiny thing someone picked up for you at a Christmas market because it made them think of you.
Small Christmas gifts work because there is no obligation inside them. Inside them is recognition: I know who you are. And this year we have one big piece of news to go with this story, which is luckily also small and lovely. But first things first.

Big news from Lai Street
From the first of November, our new shop is open at Lai Street 4 in Tallinn Old Town: 100kingitust by Sokisahtel. It is a gift and souvenir shop where Estonian souvenirs, socks and gifts all live under one roof. If you have ever stepped into our souvenir shop at Tallinn Airport, you already know what to expect. Now the same shop exists where gift shopping actually happens: in the Old Town, right next to the Christmas market. A shop for those moments when you need something small and good, but the recipient is a colleague from abroad, an old friend, or that one person who already has everything. In other words: small Christmas gifts got a proper home.
We did not end up in the Old Town by accident. On the way to the Christmas market or back, Lai Street is on your route anyway, and when the bustle of Town Hall Square gets tiring, our door is the quieter place where you can think your gifts through in peace. It is warm inside, you can take your gloves off, and nobody breathes down your neck.
Why small Christmas gifts beat big ones

Our wrapping table experience says small gifts hold three trump cards. Price: twenty euros buys something genuinely good, not a compromise. Courage: with a small gift you are allowed to take risks and be personal, because even if it misses, nobody is left sitting on an expensive mistake. And size: a small gift fits in a coat pocket, an advent calendar, a stocking and a carry-on bag.
That last one matters more than it seems. Anyone who has ever flown somewhere for the holidays knows: a suitcase is a limited resource. A pair of socks is not.
Socks, of course
It would be strange if we did not say it. But we say it with a clear conscience, because we see it work at the counter every single day: socks are the best small gift in the world. Everyone always needs them, the sizing never goes so wrong that the gift stays unused, and a sock with the right pattern says more about the recipient than many a Christmas card. Christmas socks are the classic of the genre, from elves to reindeer, and for a true Christmas person you can confidently gift a whole battery, one pair for every week of Advent. Small Christmas gifts start with a sock.
If the recipient is more of an art person than an elf person, there are art socks, where the works of Estonian artists live on in socks. And if you want to gift warmth instead of jokes, merino wool socks are the gift that gets worn every single day from January to April. Why wool is the only right choice in winter, we explained at length in our winter fashion guide.
Estonian things to take home

100kingitust by Sokisahtel was born partly out of one particular pain: for too long, an Estonian souvenir meant a fridge magnet and a shot glass. Our Estonia-themed gifts are chosen on the principle that you would want them for yourself: socks with Estonian motifs are something a friend abroad will actually wear.
And then two things so Estonian that nobody thinks of them until someone says it out loud. A reflector is a gift that can quite literally save a life, and for a foreigner it is also the best conversation starter: a country where November is so dark that wearing a reflector is required by law. And pin badges are tiny, light and collectable. In our shops people buy them simply to keep in a drawer, because one fits on top of every gift.
Warm little things
One step up from the sock come warm accessories, still small but with a big effect. Scarves and neckerchiefs fit beautifully into a gift bag, and about the alpaca wool scarf we will be honest with you at the counter: the recipient will later claim they bought it themselves. Nobody wants to admit that something this good arrived as a gift.
A bigger family gift can also be built out of small ones: socks and a scarf, socks and a blanket, socks and a beautiful mug. The set looks thought through, but every piece on its own is small and lovely. The best small Christmas gifts come in pairs.
The advent calendar, or twenty-four small gifts in a row

The category winner of small Christmas gifts is of course the advent calendar. Twenty-four tiny packages, one every morning, and by the end of December even the most stubborn believer in big gifts has been converted. Socks, pin badges and reflectors are made for filling a calendar. And if hiding them all yourself sounds like too much work, our sock advent calendars come with twenty-four pairs already hidden inside, all you have to do is open the doors.
The Christmas market plan: where to go and where to stop by

The Christmas market is the natural habitat of small gifts, and Tallinn’s market on Town Hall Square is among the most beautiful in Europe for a reason. Our suggestion is to make a whole evening of it. Mulled wine and gingerbread on the square, then a walk through the Old Town, and a warm stop at Lai Street 4, where the gift bag gets properly filled without you having to dig for your wallet with gloves on. And small Christmas gifts all fit into one bag.
If you are travelling further for the markets, take note: small Christmas gifts are also the only sensible genre to bring home from a trip. Carry-on luggage is even more unforgiving than a suitcase.
