Today we’re talking about our new initiative – packaging-free ordering from the Sokisahtli online shop. For years now, we’ve been striving to be as environmentally conscious as possible and have wanted to do our bit to reduce the amount of unnecessary packaging waste in the world.
That’s why, together with you, we’re running a trial period throughout April and May, during which ALL products ordered from our online shop will be packaging-free. We’ll be testing this with you to see how it works and whether we could continue with this approach in our online shop in the future.
How does Sokisahtli’s packaging-free ordering work?
When you place an order via our online shop, the packaging-free option is automatically selected. This means that when we prepare your order, we remove the product labels and immediately return them to the warehouse, where they’ll be reused on subsequent products. And that’s exactly how it works – we can even let you in on a little secret: how can you tell whether the packaging is already on its umpteenth cycle of use? – Well, we simply stick new product barcode labels onto the existing labels. And that’s why you might find, for example, two barcode stickers on top of each other on a label.
With socks and thicker tights, it’s simple: a black product label with the Sokisahtli logo goes straight back into use in the warehouse, and the labelled products end up hanging on the racks in our shops, waiting for their new owners. It’s also possible to leave the packaging at the shop when making a purchase, and many of our customers do take advantage of this option.
It’s a bit more complicated with socks and delicate tights. With these, we remove the plastic wrap and recycle it. We place the delicate item between sheets of paper. When you receive the product, all you need to do is put the paper in the recycling bin or with your packaging waste – and that’s another small task sorted.
So what do these packaging-free orders look like?
The socks come with a plastic hook and paper packaging. When removing them, please place the packaging in the recycling bin so that it can be reused!
The product is delivered packaging-free. The cardboard box, plastic hook and paper label are already being reused.
The tights come wrapped in plastic film, with a paper sleeve and an inner cardboard insert. Please put these in the recycling bin so they can be recycled!
The product comes in a paper sleeve, as it is a delicate pair of 20DEN tights. Please place the paper sleeve and the inner cardboard in the waste paper collection point. You can use the inner cardboard as notepaper.
The tights are wrapped in paper packaging. Please place this in the recycling bin so it can be recycled!
This packaging-free product comes without any packaging. As this is a pair of 60DEN tights, which are a sturdier variety, no packaging or cardboard support is required! The packaging is already being reused.

And one more thing. When we send you a parcel, we’ll reuse the packaging wherever possible. Similarly, if you receive a box, carton or bag from us, please open it up – if you need to send a parcel yourself, you can reuse it too.
It’s worth cutting plastic packaging neatly open with a pair of scissors; you can then reuse it, for example, to send a book or some chocolate to a friend. Reuse is in fashion and becoming increasingly popular. So let’s keep up with the trends and help keep the planet cleaner!
Hmm, but what if I still want my products to come with packaging?
From 22 April, we’ll be sending all orders from the Sokisahtli online shop packaging-free. However, if you definitely want packaging around your socks or a pair of tights, you can tick the relevant box when ordering and everything will arrive neatly packaged, ready for gifting, for example.
But how will I know what my packaging-free product consists of and how to look after it?
When it comes to socks and tights, care and washing are much simpler than with delicate jumpers, expensive fur coats or other textile products. Naturally, it’s best to wash delicate items by hand (such as tights and sheer stockings) or in a laundry bag on a hand-wash cycle.
For socks, it’s also best to wash them on a hand-wash cycle at a temperature of up to 30 degrees. This is particularly true for products made from merino, angora and alpaca wool, which may shrink if washed in warmer water. You can find the care instructions on our website HERE. But you can’t use the packaging forever, some of it will break – so what do you do then?
Yes, that’s true. We actually hold a record here: the most times we’ve managed to reuse a sock tag is a whopping five times – it just keeps coming back from the shop. But it’s true that the labels wear out, and in most cases the packaging can be reused 2–3 times. We collect any labels that are no longer usable and send them for recycling as packaging waste.
But what about transport packaging?
For transport packaging, we use cardboard and paper packaging, which you can place in the paper and cardboard collection bin. We also use biodegradable plastic wrappers, but generally only when a parcel is ordered for collection from a parcel locker. You can place biodegradable plastic wrappers in the packaging bin. When ordering from a shop, your parcel will usually arrive in a paper bag.

Packaging-free and eco-friendly ECOCARE
Packaging-free shopping isn’t the only way you can support sustainability in Estonia. Together with us, you can also help protect nature and the environment by wearing items from our NILIT® Ecocare collection. These are made from recycled nylon scraps, the production of which saves both materials and resources.
So just how much material and water is saved, you might ask? Here are some figures showing the resources saved per tonne of yarn. Energy savings amount to 6,194 kW per tonne – that’s 87.6% less – throughout the entire production process; water savings amount to 18 cubic metres per tonne; and, overall, 55% fewer resources are used in production. 22 April is Earth Day! What is it and why is it celebrated?
This day has been celebrated internationally since 1970. The aim of Earth Day is to raise awareness of the vulnerability of our planet’s natural resources and to teach people how they can do their bit to protect the environment. It also aims to show that it is possible to be more environmentally friendly in our daily lives.
To mark Earth Day, various events and activities are organised, aimed at reducing environmental pollution, promoting renewable energy, planting trees and other activities that raise environmental awareness.
