Choosing tights for school can be a real headache – some are itchy, others are the wrong size, and some just look weird… But school is starting again soon, and it’s the perfect time to start making preparations. In addition to notebooks, textbooks, and pens, it’s a good idea to check the sock and tights drawer. Our selection of tights is wide, which is why we’ve put together a guide on how to choose them. How to choose tights? Material, pattern, thickness
First, start by thinking about what the tights are for. Depending on the need, they can be thick or thin, colorful or subtle, sparkly or patterned. Do you need them for school, everyday wear, special occasions, or for protection against the winter cold?
Tights for school uniforms
Every school has specific colors for their uniform tights, whether it’s navy blue, dark red, black, or shades of gray. Usually, solid colors in subtle tones are preferred. When choosing tights for a school uniform, it’s also important that they are durable and the right size. Ask the school for specific guidelines and make your choice in our online store or on-site! Since school lasts from autumn to spring, it’s worth investing in warmer materials to keep your child’s legs warm even in freezing temperatures.
Everyday tights for kids
Everyday kids’ tights are mostly made of cotton, either in solid colors or with fun patterns. A golden rule for cotton tights is that the more pattern there is, the less they stretch. This is also worth considering when choosing tights. Cotton tights are a great choice for everyday wear because of their soft feel and durability. They won’t make legs itchy or start running easily.
Dressy tights for kids
Dressy tights are often made of polyamide, which is a thinner material than cotton. Polyamide tights are perfect under skirts and dresses for school ceremonies, for example. Due to their light feel, they are also a good choice for early autumn or late spring when the weather is warm but it’s not quite bare-leg weather yet. Winter tights and leggings for kids
For winter, merino wool tights and leggings are ideal. Merino wool tights are often a parent’s first choice to keep their children warm during the cold autumn and winter months. For toddlers, merino wool products are perfect because they react to body temperature, absorb moisture, and are hypoallergenic. The special thing about merino wool is that it doesn’t make legs sweat even during the most active play. This way, you don’t have to worry about your child getting too hot while having fun outside in cold weather.
How to choose the right size for your child?
Kids’ tights sizes are based on the child’s height and are marked on the packaging in centimeters, similar to clothing sizes. If a child has slightly longer legs, it’s always worth buying tights one size larger so they stay on comfortably without pulling or falling down. For tall girls, women’s XS, S, and M sizes also work perfectly. The women’s tights packaging also includes a size chart, making it easy to pick the right size.
As mentioned before, keep in mind that patterned cotton tights stretch less than polyamide tights, for example. When choosing the size, consider the material and thickness.
How to properly care for tights?
Since tights are delicate and kids tend to wear them out quickly, it’s generally recommended to wash them by hand. The best temperature for this is up to 40 degrees. If you still want to machine wash them, use the gentlest cycle and choose a cold wash. When machine washing thinner tights, you should definitely use a laundry bag to prevent damage.
To prevent snagging, turn the tights inside out before washing! This way, your kids’ tights will last much longer!
What to do with tights that are too small?
Since kids grow at an incredible speed, it often happens that clothes and tights bought at the start of the school year no longer fit by the end. Not to mention those pairs where a hole has mysteriously appeared in one leg. It just broke, and it can’t be fixed! Luckily, we have some great ideas for what to do with outgrown (and even holey) tights, so they don’t have to find their way into the trash.
An adorable octopus made from old tights
You will need:
- 4 pairs of outgrown tights
- Stuffing material, such as cotton wool
- Thread
- Toy eyes, for example from another outgrown piece of clothing
Instructions:
- Stuff all the octopus legs (the tights) with cotton wool, up to about the knee, no more.
- The octopus trick is that all the leg parts must face the same direction.
- You can make the head by folding the top part of one pair of tights over the ‘legs’ (similar to how you fold a pair of socks for the drawer). But to keep the ‘head’ from being inside out, cut a small hole between the leg parts and poke the legs through before folding. This way, the octopus head is right-side out!
- Stuff the other three pairs of tights into the octopus head so that the legs of all pairs are at the same level. Add a bit more stuffing to the head to make a round ball.
- Sew the hole you made earlier and the octopus head closed so it stays securely attached to the legs.
- Sew on the eyes
- And you’re done!
