Wash your socks the right way! To make your socks last longer and have fewer holes to mend, it’s great to remind yourself every now and then: how were you supposed to wash those socks properly again?
The 40-degree rule
Did you put your socks in the washing machine and they came out a size or two smaller? Ouch, the sock fairy got heatstroke! Socks shouldn’t be washed at over 40 degrees! Always check the care instructions on the label, but generally, cotton socks, knee-highs, and tights should be washed at 40 degrees.
Good old clothesline
Socks definitely don’t like the dryer; to keep their shape and size, you should hang them on a clothesline the old-fashioned way.
How to wash wool socks?
Woolen socks, including merino wool, should ideally be washed by hand. If you put them in the machine, wash them at 40 degrees and do not use the spin cycle. Do the same for angora wool and brushed acrylic socks.
The mystery of single socks
And the age-old question: where do socks disappear to in the washing machine? Have you suspected a sock-eater lurking in the machine, snacking on one every now and then? Actually, this mystery was solved long ago: socks slip between the seal near the washing machine door and disappear into the machine’s interior. If you put socks in the machine with a duvet cover, they might hide inside it. One way to avoid losing them is, for example, to tie two socks together. And you can always put your socks in the machine using a laundry bag.
